(04-22) 18:56 PDT -- Mayor Gavin Newsom vowed Sunday to maintain San Francisco as a sanctuary for immigrants and do everything he can to discourage federal authorities from conducting immigration raids.

The mayor cannot stop federal authorities from making arrests, Newsom told about 300 mostly Latino members of St. Peter's Church and other religious groups supporting immigrants. But no San Francisco employee will help with immigration enforcement.

"I will not allow any of my department heads or anyone associated with this city to cooperate in any way shape or form with these raids," Newsom declared. "We are a sanctuary city, make no mistake about it."

My apologies for linking to such and old article, but I saw a couple of similar media items recently and used this story for my example. We have cities in our country whose leadership is openly flouting our countries laws. I have a MAJOR problem with that. Illegal immigrants are by definition, not citizens, and are breaking our countries laws to be here. For any elected city official to then stand up publicly and state that not only will they not arrest or deport these people, but will instead support their illegal ways by giving them ID cards etc is a mockery of our justice system. These individuals should be charged as accomplices and fined, jailed or whatever is appropriate for these illegal actions. The US government and/or State government needs to step in and tell these cities that they will be responsible for the cost of the free medical care, emergency services, welfare, and any other benefits that these illegals consume. Let's see how that flies with the taxpayers of those cities. How long do you think it would take to get a recall election going if that happened? It is time to act...
