Anti-Gun Argument, Always Pure Hysterics

by Warner Todd Huston
The anti-gun argument is always built solely upon emotional excess. It’s all about “feelings” and “fears” and almost never built on any facts or reality. In another example of the kind of hand-wringing, excessive, faux compassion that ignores the real statistics we are so used to, the Charlotte Observer has given space to one of their propagandists... I mean writers... to vent against the evil gun, once again.

The Observer's Dannye Romine-Powell (God save us from another hyphenated named, female liberal) gets all amush over the "unruffled thinking" of her gun hating husband and tries her hand at citing statistics to such poor effect that it is embarrassing. But her empty argument very much embodies that which lies at the heart of the anti-Constitutional crowd.

Romine-Powell begins her screed wondering if she might want a gun to protect her home and family. But she claims that her husband told her they didn't need a gun if they wanted to keep safe the lives of their grandchildren who he thought might be unlucky enough to find the gun in their grandparent's home. His supposed fear was that they might play with the gun, accidentally injuring or killing themselves. One wonders, of course, why these supposedly intelligent, caring grandparents would leave such a thing laying around where a child could so easily get to it, so with that admission of neglect it makes one glad they have decided not to get one.

Conservative Bloggers Comments:

I found this to be a great article and worthy of the read. I am personally pro guns and while I can respect those that choose to not own guns, I oppose with vigor those that advocate limiting my (or anyone else's) ability to do so. We should no more outlaw guns than we should outlaw cars even though cars kill a lot more people. Both ideas are ludicrous. Perhaps we will get other opinions.

Lasermike, you are the reason why many blogs review comments before they allow them to be posted. Try being sober when you post.

The right to bear arms is guaranteed in the Constitution not because of hunting, but rather to protect the populous from the government.

To understand that is to see why government would want to control the right to own guns.

Alexander Hamilton put it best in Federalist 28: "If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no recourse left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense which is paramount to all positive forms of government, and which against the usurpations of the national rulers may be exerted with infinitely better prospect of success than against those of the rulers of an individual State. In a single State, if the persons entrusted with supreme power become usurpers, the different parcels, subdivisions, or districts of which it consists, having no distinct government in each, can take no regular measures for defense. The citizens must rush tumultuously to arms, without concert, without system, without resource; except in their courage and despair."

Is it odd that a conservative would not even have a response to that post? Has the conservative movement failed to such a degree that it does not even address it's core beliefs and concepts?

Has the conservative movement become so needy of attention that it now must cater to the lowest common denominator and continue to address non-issues like stem-cell research while failing on it's core beliefs of FREEDOM?

Your president has not failed you, you failed him. You failed to hold him the highest degree of conservatism, to the highest standard of conservative core beliefs. You failed to show him disdain in his scandalous regime, and you failed to hold him to the precepts of conservatism: less government, more freedoms, and adherence to the Constitution.

Shameful, but the more both parties become entrenched in political warfare, the more the lead themselves down the path of obsolescence.

2Cents, you operate under the assumption that I care what you think about the conservative movement. I don't. I am interested in discussing the topics of our day but do so knowing we agree on very little (if anything). Poking fun at my party or my beliefs I usually pretty much ignore and consider the source. You post as though you are all-knowing and weak minds (like us conservatives) will come around if you keep saying the same thing over and over. What you fail to see is that we won't. This is what we believe. I don't expect everyone to see things my way but at the same time I am not ashamed to state what I think and feel. If it so offends then I guess it is working. I expect it to offend those who think differently. Just as I get offended when I stop by liberal (general terms for opposing political beliefs) sites. Mission accomplished. The one thing I will add as I go is that I have been very proud of the eight years George w. Bush has been President (it's never perfect) and I am proud that I voted for him both times.

Ah, but how conservatives all wish they had strong "minds" (not to be confused with "wills"). You also fail to see that I am not contesting your conservative values, but the wholehearted change the conservative movement has seen in the last 10 years toward mediocrity and extremism.

YOU ARE PROUD OF BUSH?????? Jesus, I voted for him and am ashamed of my decision. The guys is a scoundrel of the highest order, and his cronies have formed on of the most dishonest and scandalous regimes in recent memory. Bush is, quite frankly, one of the worst presidents in our history. I will only say I didn't really vote FOR Bush, I just couldn't vote for Kerry.

Perhaps you are proud of your conservative movement, although no one could attest as to your source of pride. Our freedoms get eroded each day by a pseudo-conservative administration while giving power to equally bombastic democrats. Our wealthiest get richer while our poorest get poorer. Health care is crazy, and real Americans suffer under an economic policy that only benefits the wealthy.

Soon it will all come crashing down, but I guess as long as you stick to your "conservative" values you will have nothing to fear. After all, it is easier to throw stones from your ivory tower than it is to collect them from the street. Good luck!
